We recently sat down with Lee’s Creative Manager and Urban Creator ‘Hey Stubby’ to talk DIY and get some inspo on trashing your denim this Summer.

How did you go about customizing the Lee Denim for our latest Summer Campaign? What did you use? Any tips for the crafty kids out there?
I just went wild with some posca pens, house paint and permanent markers! I prefer customizing a lighter denim as the markers and poscas show up really well, then you can chuck them in the washing machine once you’re done to give ‘em that sexy faded look. Anybody with arms can customize their own pair, my tip for you crafty kids is to just start scribbling and have fun with it. The more mistakes you make the better I say!

Where do you get your inspiration from and how long does a piece usually take?
Hmmm, I guess I get my inspiration from 80’s and 90’s music, movies and pop culture; all the rad logos and typography that come from that era really get me going. But with DIY and scribbling on denim you can get ideas from absolutely anything, just let your brain run wild I say!
With timeframes, I guess a piece can take you as long as you want it to take. On one hand I’ve spent over 2 weeks on one pair of jeans and then in one night I’ve had to paint 50 jackets. It’s all-apart of the fun really, sometimes the ones you rush and make mistakes on turn out the best.

You seem like a pretty fun dude, when you’re not being creative or slaving it out at Lee what do you like to do in your down time?
I have a serious passion for dancing on the weekend. Going to gig’s and moving my body makes me feel happy inside. I also enjoy eating a big batch of crispy chicken nuggets as they also make me feel happy inside.
In all seriousness though, in my down time I do still enjoy getting crafty and painting stuff. I find it quite therapeutic and it balances out the nugget intake.
